SPIRITS IN BONDAGE is a semi-autobiographical performance art album. I sure as heck didn’t write it: a young C.S. Lewis did, under the name Clive Hamilton. The story found within echoes in my heart and terrifies me. I’ll be working on these mythic poems until I’ve strangled each of them dead.

This first collection of 12 tracks was born in a studio apartment ON ROOSEVELT ISLAND, ‘tween Manhattan & Queens. The singles, if you would be so kind, would have to be “Spooks”, “Night (one)” and “Ode for New Year’s Day”.

MARK: Tell me, tell me.

BRIAN: What is there to tell?

MARK: Tell me how you can be so lame. Teach me your ways.

BRIAN: However lame I may be…I just didn’t know. Can’t blame me for not knowing all the details.

MARK: Details? “Teachers” should be prepared for details like these.

BRIAN: Just trust me. It is written: ‘Everything will be okay.’

MARK: Dude. Don’t believe everything you read. That’s the only way to win the war.

BRIAN: Relax. I asked you to come. You’re no captive.

MARK: Serious. I’m serious. I want to know. I need to know. Why are you so infinitely lame?

BRIAN: Forgive me, for I knew not what I—

MARK: Is this because you only had your G.I. Joes to comfort you at night?

BRIAN: Come off it, bro. I’ve been coasting on squat for years. I’ve proven I can deal.

MARK: Always, man. You always pulling this… You do these things; these stupid dives—

BRIAN: This is the place. I need to meet these people. A new network, ‘s the only way.

MARK: However.

BRIAN: Yes? However…?

MARK: You need to be here? Sure, I see that.

BRIAN: Thank you.

MARK: Don’t thank me.

BRIAN: Okay.

MARK: Okay. But, why bring me? Liquor store. Gun store. Liquor store. Gun store. Brian, who would lease a spot in this suicide cocktail?

BRIAN: Cheap rent. Don’t worry ‘bout it.

MARK: Let’s get outta here.

BRIAN: Relax.

MARK: Please.

BRIAN: …paranoid.

MARK: Punk.

BRIAN: Hello? Hi. Uh. Could you tell us…

(Sue-Z totally ignores him.)

MARK: You. Have. Gotta be kidding me.

BRIAN: Miss. Is this…El Centro?

SUE-Z: ‘S right.

(Pause.)

BRIAN: Tolja, Mark. What’d I tell you?

SUE-Z: How do you hear about today’s meeting?

BRIAN: Sorry?

SUE-Z: You heard me. How did you hear?

MARK: The radio. On the radio. Can we just go in already?

BRIAN: Thanks for your help, Miss…?

SUE-Z: …Sue-Z.

MARK: Through there?

(Sue-Z nods and returns to her reading. Mark exits.)

BRIAN: Hey. Please, forgive Mark. He’s excited is all. We’re hoping to—

SUE-Z: Like I care. Go join your girlfriend.

(The lights fall as the music rises.)
